Three cutting-edge seminars created for you, by your peers, are the highlight of the
May 24-25 BUILDINGSNY show at the Javits Center, where not only is the price right—free to BOMA/NY members—but the content is, as well. BOMA/NY, as the show’s exclusive commercial real estate partner, has made sure of that; all three seminars offer the very latest information, skills and techniques in their respective areas. And as they were developed by your fellow professionals, the content relates directly to your everyday needs. We’ve also made them convenient—all three are offered May 25 from morning through early afternoon.

BOMAfacts spoke to the seminar developers to hear their thoughts on why their presentations will take your leadership and management skills to a higher level.

Walter ("Buck) F. Ulmer, III, President of Remlu, Inc. on the level of detail in the Keynote he is presenting from 8:45 to 9:45 am: Survive, Communicate, Assist: A Building Staff’s Mantra During an Active Shooter Incident

"In those precious few minutes at the outset of an active shooter incident—before law enforcement arrives—what should the staff do? We’ll be answering the full range of questions, such as what should staff communicate to tenants, and what should those communications contain? What building systems need to be addressed? For example, are the elevators recalled? Fail-safe doors unlocked? Are the entrances and exits secured? We’ll cover how the building team helps tenants to help themselves, and how the building team helps first responders when they arrive. But the real key is that unlike any other active shooter presentation, this seminar drills down into the specifics of a commercial high-rise building staffs’ response activities during an exceptionally daunting incident."

Tom Krol, LEED AP, Vice President, Donnelly Mechanical on the new field of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Virtual Design Construction (VDC), which he will moderate from 10:30 until noon.

"If your desire is to be more efficient in design and the use of space, to reduce construction costs, and to identify conflicts before they become costly, this seminar is for you. We’ve put together a panel that will help you learn the basics of BIM and VDC, as well as ‘when and where’ to employ these techniques to achieve their many advantages. Designing systems and fit outs in 3-D eliminates field conflicts, the resulting change orders, and, it allows for prefabrication of components, reducing assembly in the field by 75 percent and saving both time and money. Our panel will use vibrant and interactive examples to present these dynamic new practices from the multiple of professionals in design, contracting and commercial real estate operations."

Ron Zeccardi, BOMA/NY Vice President and General Manager, The Moinian Group with insight on this seminar’s almost unprecedented opportunity for learning and Q&A with the authors of the new compliance regulations, and the scope of the critical knowledge covered in Legionella and Your Cooling Tower: How to Comply with City and State Laws. Ron moderates the seminar, which will run from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.

First, some backstory from Ron. "Last August both the State and the City (Local Law #77 of 2015) enacted mandatory emergency procedures in response to the legionella outbreaks in the Bronx, which claimed several lives. Both the City and State now require all property owners to register their buildings’ cooling towers and submit on-going documentation to demonstrate that the water treatment program being utilized meets prescribed guidelines. Most recently, the City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) issued the ‘Notice of Adoption of Chapter 8 (Cooling Towers) of Title 24 of the Rules of the City of New York.’ I am proud to say that BOMA/NY worked very closely with DHMH throughout the rule-making process."

BOMA/NY is bringing you the details of these new rules in the 2-hour BUILDINGSNY seminar; it’s a vitally important learning opportunity, and Ron describes its several key benefits as follows. "Our panel will consist of the authors of the Chapter 8 rules, so you will be receiving information directly from the source—there will be no second-guessing or opinions about the intent of the law. Both Trevor McCloud and Dan Kass of the DHMH will provide a highly specific, in-depth review of the rules."

"We’re also allowing for extensive Q&A so that they can answer any and all questions pertaining to these new rules. This is a unique opportunity on a critical issue, and I strongly urge building managers and their teams to attend."

Says BOMA/NY President, James R. Kleeman, RPA, "We’re on track to accomplishing great things in 2016," and he cites BOMA/NY’s role as exclusive commercial real estate partner at BUILDINGSNY as one of those accomplishments. The seminar content and customized amenities such as the BOMA/NY Pavilion for exhibitor access, the BOMA/NY lounge and BOMA International’s BOMA360 information exhibit demonstrate BOMA/NY’s commitment to creating the best show experience possible, he adds. "Please demonstrate your commitment by registering yourself and your building team. Registration is open at www.buildingsny.com/BOMA."
