While our members continue to deal with the lingering after-effects of Hurricane Sandy, BOMA/NY has gone to work laying out the experiences of our members before two key governmental bodies.
In two separate sessions with key disaster response and recovery officials from FEMA and the NYS Moreland Commission, BOMA/NY members briefed the governmental agencies on how Con Edison and other utilities responded to the crisis of Hurricane Sandy both during the storm and after it abated. Though details of the briefings are confidential, BOMA/NY was represented by more than 10 individuals representing leading owners and third party managers. Both briefings were held at the BOMA/NY headquarters at the request of both government entities.
The first briefing was held on Feb. 26 with the FEMA Joint Field Operation Critical Infrastructure and Key Resources Team, which is compiling a post-storm action report documenting events, the response and what FEMA can do to better respond to a severe weather storm in our area. BOMA/NY members discussed their responses, the obstacles they faced and offered observations on how the federal government can mitigate damage in future storm scenarios.
The second briefing, which took place on March 7 and included members of the NYECC, the association representing large commercial energy consumers, was held with the NYS Moreland Commission. The Commission was established by Governor Cuomo, in part, to investigate preparation, response and overall management of New York State’s power utilities regarding major storms which had impacted the state over the past few years. The session was led by the Commission’s counsel, Sherrie Wolf, who asked BOMA/NY and NYECC participants to share their experiences during Hurricane Sandy. Those experiences will be incorporated into the Commission’s Report.
BOMA/NY continues to keep these channels of communication open, and so the opportunity to place your observations on record remains. If you would like to offer your observations, please contact BOMA/NY’s Director of Legislative Affairs, Sylvester Giustino, at sylvester@bomany.com or call him at 212-239-3662. |
