The "Prepared" Company We Keep
Preparedness is a major part of our BOMA/NY mission and we are proud to be one of the 25 new companies named as Partners in Preparedness by the OEM. We’re in the company of such firms as L’Oreal USA, Price Waterhouse Coopers LLC, Ernst & Young, LLC, Classic Security and Disney/ABC Television.
September is National Preparedness Month and we are urging all our members to consider being a Partner. Members in 2012 and 2013 from the real estate community include 500 Fifth Avenue/Cushman & Wakefield, CBRE, and Trinity Real Estate. More real estate firms are needed! So consider becoming a Partner: the process will enhance your building’s readiness, is beneficial to tenants, and wins you some well-earned recognition. As a completed partner, you can become a featured partner with a profile of your success story.
Five steps are required and you will probably find you perform many of these actions already.
Required:
• Encourage coworkers and volunteers to sign up for Notify NYC, the City’s free real-time emergency notification system.
• Set up and test an emergency contact plan or call tree for your organization
• Use e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, or your website to send preparedness messages to your employees Host a preparedness display, including a sample Go Bag, Ready New York guides, and NYC Citizen Corps Council volunteer guide.
Once you have completed the above you choose from two additional activities that can range from conducting fire drills to scheduling a blood drive or Ready New York presentation with OEM, to creating and implementing your own preparedness activity. For more information, go to http://www.nyc.gov/html/oem/html/businesses/partnersinprep_required.shtml. If you are a partner and want to become a Featured Partner, send your success story to publicprivate@oem.nyc.gov.
Getting Cheeky for a Life-Saving Mission
At the 2013 BOMA International conference that wrapped up at the end of June, a mission was launched to use the BOMA network to get behind a cause supporting bone marrow registry and ultimately help those stricken with blood cancer or other seriously debilitating diseases requiring bone marrow donations. The cause brings together Racing to Register, started by a Jones Lang LaSalle employee and Delete Bone Cancer, but it hopes to bring together more—tenants from across the nation who, by volunteering for a simple cheek swab, could become part of this life-giving registry.
Office buildings in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Seattle and 15 other cities have volunteered for the national event--City Swab--taking place September 18. New York has been asked to provide at least two donation sites.
Building managers will need to allocate a small portion of their lobby, some tables and chairs, and assist in promoting the event. The charities will supply posters two weeks prior to the 18th, as well as all the testing kits and volunteers to handle the event. Those wishing to be donors will be swabbed and entered into the international bone marrow donor registry of over 4.2 million volunteers. Racing to Register’s efforts have registered 3,000 and facilitated three life-renewing transplants.
If you feel your building can accommodate these requests, please contact BOMA/NY’s Executive Director Bobbi McGowan, CAE at 212-239-3662 or bobbimc@bomany.com.
