Mayor de Blasio is looking to push two major initiatives forward that will interest and no doubt concern BOMA New York members. First, the Mayor, along with the City Council, is looking to drastically cut emissions from existing building’s heating and cooling systems by 2030 in order to meet the City’s goal of reducing overall emissions by 80% by 2050. Few details of the mandate have been finalized or released, but the Council will reportedly introduce a bill as soon as early October, and they hope to pass it by the end of the year. This will require our close attention as we work with allies and the City to ensure a reasonable approach moving forward.
In addition, the Mayor, through the Department of Sanitation (DSNY), is looking to take additional steps forward in pushing commercial waste franchising, where the City would be divided into a number of zones, each of which would receive commercial waste hauling by one or more contracted haulers. DSNY has hired consultants to design the franchising system, and they are beginning to meet with stakeholders on a task force, including BOMA New York, to discuss the issues. BOMA New York and our allies have and will continue to advocate for less extreme measures that can address environmental and safety issues in a more efficient and less costly way.
Much more to come on both of these major issues.
