Get more–information, insight and the inside track—by being part of a BOMA/NY committee. They’re the engines of BOMA/NY, where your colleagues do the work that moves our industry forward and provides each of us with tools for success. All committee meetings are listed in the BOMAFACTS Calendar and are open to all. Below is a round-up of news from our latest committee activities.
Codes & Regulations/Government Affairs
This committee’s jurisdiction covers almost two dozen areas as circumstances dictate. On the radar screen now are the following:
ASHRAE National Standards: Now before City Council is a bill that will finally bring New York City into line with the rest of the country through the adoption of ASHRAE 189.1. This new national standard sets the highest benchmarks possible for equipment operating efficiency, and can deliver a performance level up to 30% more efficient than the 2004 standard now being used. Needless to say, BOMA/NY supports the adoption of this standard, which should become effective December 28th.
FYI re: THE FDNY: The FDNY looked to BOMA/NY to develop guidelines for making building Fire Safety, EAP and Fire Dill logbooks simpler and more effective. The recommendations are in and we will keep you posted on the end result.
Local 94: At press time, our latest information on contract negotiations from the Realty Advisory Board on Labor Relations is that November 13th will be the first of six negotiation meetings scheduled through the end of this year. The main issues on the table are health benefits and pay increases.
Preparedness Committee
Does your building team have one hour to help our Lessons Learned Sub-committee do a dry run of the post-event, debriefing interviews it would conduct with building staff after experiencing an emergency event?
This subcommittee is charged with gathering data on real-case, emergency response scenarios to share the "lessons learned". Already more than two dozen buildings have volunteered to be in the potential pool of buildings that might experience such an event, which can range from the failed Times Square bombing to the Sixth Avenue transformer fire or East Side steam pipe explosion.
You don’t need to have experienced an incident, just be available to participate in a practice session for the Lessons Learned interviewers. Ready to volunteer now? Contact Walter Ulmer at wfuiii@remluinc.com.
Energy Committee
Green Outreach: Available now is a 30-minute presentation explaining the Greener Greater Buildings laws, major deadlines, and financing and training opportunities. It's geared to owners and managers, and created by a team from the Mayor’s office, Urban Green Council (UGC), Con Edison and NYSERDA. UGC members will make the presentation, which includes 10 minutes for Q&A. Sign up now by contacting Yetsuh Frank at yf@urbangreencouncil.org.
Energy efficiency: Con Edison is holding a seminar throughout November on its new commercial and industrial energy efficiency program. For information or to sign up, go to www.conedci.eventbrite.com. For those interested in the Negotiated Fuel Cost Program, please remember it is open to all customers. Contact Beth Wynne for more information at wynee@coned.com.
Energy Action Day 2011: Volunteers are needed for the Task Force creating content for this popular energy information event, scheduled for March 8, 2011. Join us at 9 a.m. on November 18th at the BOMA/NY headquarters to start planning!
