Much was expected of Hearst Tower when it began rising above the NYC skyline in the early 2000’s—it was the City's first new construction to be announced after 9/11, and the first to target LEED Gold.
It delivered on every count, achieving LEED Gold for commercial interiors AND core & shell. It made the business world and the general public take note—making "building green" a reality, and "working green" a comfortable experience. It became the star of TV documentaries, news reports, fan blogs and global travel tours.
Then it threw its hat into the ring to compete for honors within its own industry, winning the Pinnacle for New Construction (2006-07), Earth (2007-08) and ultimately Corporate Facility (2009-10). The Hearst management team decided to move forward with the Corporate TOBY, where its green prowess would be a major asset, but its true strength would be found in the seamless integration of property management practice and corporate goals. It won the Regional TOBY earlier this year and then went on to compete against properties from across the US and Canada in the International competition; final results would be announced at the TOBY dinner gala on the evening of Tuesday, June 28th, the close of the 2011 BOMA International Conference and the Every Building Show.
Like the Pinnacles, International TOBY Award winners are kept secret until they are announced, category by category, at the awards ceremony. At the ceremony on the night of June 28th, before a crowd of hundreds of real estate professionals from across the globe, the Hearst team saw themselves up against heavy competition: the Hunt Corporate Headquarters in Dallas, Texas; Maple Leaf Foods in Mississauga, Ontario; the McDonald’s Campus in Oak Brook, Illinois; Roofing Concepts Unlimited in Coral Springs, Florida and Wells Fargo Home Mortgage Campus in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Hearst win was announced shortly after 9 pm and the Hearst team was both relieved and overjoyed to learn they had bested such renowned facilities.
"Every day, our colleagues managing the operations of Hearst Corporation’s Gold LEED-certified global headquarters, Hearst Tower, go above and beyond to ensure that our facilities are functioning at the best level possible," said Lou Nowikas, senior director of real estate and facilities planning for Hearst Corporation. "This BOMA Corporate Facility of the Year Award is a testament to the dedicated team of professionals, including the team at Tishman Speyer and Property Manager Siro Gonzalez, who maintain Hearst Tower in an award-winning condition every day, and we’re thrilled to be recognized."
The tower's TOBY win for Corporate Facility makes five BOMA-related awards for the Tower in total—the most won by any New York building—as well as the fourth New York City tower since 2000 to bring home Corporate honors. And, it's our city's first LEED Gold winner at the International level.
And so the tower that pioneered diagrid construction in the US, rooftop rainwater collection and numerous other green advances also proved to its fellow professionals that in the critical business of day-to-day operations, it can serve its tenants and owner at the highest of professional management standards. Join us in saluting Hearst Tower for this outstanding win for its team, and for New York.
