April Agenda: All Things Green

Sustainability was on the calendar this past month with our Annual Energy Action Day, Earth Week/Day events taking place at many of our members’ buildings, and the launch of Sustainability Boot Camp, the energy efficiency and sustainability training pilot program, a major public/private collaborative effort to bring G-PRO O&M to as many industry professionals as possible.

Energy Action Day’s High-Level Expertise

More than 150 were on hand the morning of April 7 at Energy Action Day for an in-depth briefing on the Mayor's 80 X 50 plan by keynoter Nilda Mesa, Director of the Mayor's Office of Sustainability,  shown here at left, and our panel of experts pictured below. The far-ranging presentation covered the role and responsibilities of the commercial real estate sector in helping to meet the goals of the plan.

Going for G-PRO

BOMA/NY is proud to be a collaborative partner in Sustainability Boot Camp, which brought together The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, NYSERDA, REBNY, the Urban Green Council and BOMA/NY in an unprecedented effort to bring green education to as many NYC building managers, superintendents, operators and engineers as possible. All those completing the coursework, which was offered at the steeply discounted prices of $30, will qualify for the G-PRO Operations & Maintenance certificate.

BOMA/NY President James R. Kleeman, RPA, who said "we are thrilled to be a partner in this important endeavor," sees Sustainability Boot Camp as critical to achieving the goal of ensuring that "our building managers and staff have the skills and knowledge they need to operate buildings efficiently and sustainably." He went on to underscore the importance of sustainability, stating that "energy efficiency reduces pollution; improves public health; saves energy, water and other resources, and greatly improves our tenants’ experiences."

BOMA/NY member Code Green Solutions was tapped to provide faculty and content for the coursework, including customized "real world" discussion modules. Code Green Principal Christopher H. Cayten, LEED AP says: "We really value this chance to interact with building operators to both teach and learn from them at the same time."

With the April teaching modules now complete, content for the next phase--including the BOMA BEEP energy conservation program--is under discussion. BOMAfacts will bring you more information as it becomes available.
