Member since 2016 As the executive director of the British Columbia Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada (AIC-BC), I work with an engaged board of directors on behalf of 1,200 members across the province. We support our members by implementing services, programs, and policies to ensure the appraisal profession is advanced and the public is protected. As a new professional, I was encouraged to join CSAE and participate in courses and events to expand my network and draw on the experience from my peers. AIC-BC regularly attends CSAE’s Symposium for Chief Staff and Chief Elected Officers. I find that this program helps to ensure that, as an association, we continue to uphold best practices in governance and strategy, as well as the leadership skills needed to remain relevant and move the organization forward. I am the marketing and communications coordinator and magazine associate editor at the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, a division of the Canadian Bar Association. For the past five years, I’ve sat on the CSAE Trillium Network’s young professionals committee, helping to bring educational and networking opportunities to association professionals under 35 years of age, and a few months ago I joined the Trillium Network’s FORUM newsletter committee. Last fall, I also moderated a panel on personal branding for young professionals. If you consider yourself a “Leader on the Rise” we’d love to feature you on our website. If done well, the job of board chair can have a considerable impact on an organization as a whole. It has the capability of significantly enhancing an organization's effectiveness, efficiency, and public image. Excerpt: “You have likely served on your board for some time, and have watched and worked with others who have held the position of chair. No doubt you formed opinions about each of them — how well they communicated, how well they dealt with contentious issues or problems when they arose, and how well they ran meetings. Everyone has attended poorly chaired meetings, and yes, chairing meetings is the chair’s job. But it’s not the only part, and some might suggest it isn’t the most important aspect either. This publication explores various aspects of the chair’s job, but at the outset we need to set the stage for what is to follow. The chair’s job is to manage the board, not manage the chief staff officer or the organization itself.” Order at a 10% discount through June 30, 2019. Be a more effective staff or volunteer leader by embracing six emerging competencies, eight essential organizational foundations, and one unifying strategy (co-creation). Excerpt: “Many books have been written about leadership competencies and leading organizational change efforts, but most of them are focused on the corporate sector and few can be applied to associations. Leading an association is different from leading in the for-profit sector, and this book is designed to provide association leaders and future association leaders with an understanding of the skills they to enhance or acquire to ensure their success as association leaders and the success of their associations.” Order at a 10% discount through June 30, 2019.
