Onondaga Community College Becomes First Two-Year Institution to go Off Campus with CBORD

Ithaca, New York—The CBORD Group, Inc., the leading provider of campus card and integrated security solutions to colleges and universities, is pleased to announce that Onondaga Community College (OCC) in Syracuse, New York, has become the first two-year institution to select CBORD’s off-campus commerce program powered by CBORD’s powerful UGryd® system.

"Onondaga Community College’s decision to go with UGryd is an exciting step and is evidence of the increasing interest among two-year institutions to create more value for their students," said Jeff Dean, University Sales Manager for the CBORD® Off-Campus Commerce solution. "OCC is a leader in an emerging group of two-year institutions that are extending their campus footprint by connecting local merchants to local two-year college students. This is a service that students are looking for and one that communities welcome."

OCC kicked off its off-campus program just in time for the fall semester with 13 new merchants online, including CVS, Byrne Dairy, Wings Over Syracuse, Pizza Hut, and Dominos.

"Opening the on-campus discretionary account to off-campus merchants is a win for my business, students, and the university. I'm looking forward to growing the business and relationship with the local community," said Sergio Salomone, Catering & Marketing Manager for Pizza Hut–V&J Foods.

OCC has been a CBORD client since 2008, utilizing CBORD’s CS Gold® campus card system for dining, bookstore, access control, laundry, and campus vending needs. Dean said it was because of this on-campus program foundation that OCC has been able to so easily and successfully go off campus.

"The Off-Campus Advantage program is a tremendous service for our students," said Robert Pawlewicz, SMART Card Manager for OCC. "It’s a convenient way for students to obtain the services and resources they need while supporting local businesses in the Central New York community."

"CBORD has created an enabling technology that is ideally suited for two-year institutions. Using the UGryd system, OCC can offer unique convenience to students, increase safety through decreasing the requirement to carry cash for small transactions, and tighten the relationship between the local community and the college. It’s a win-win for all sides," said Shawn McCarthy, Managing Director, Wide Area Commerce Solutions, The CBORD Group, Inc. "And why shouldn’t two-year institutions—which are so quickly achieving a far more significant role in the American educational landscape—offer more of the benefits and advantages that four-year colleges have? This is an idea whose time has come."
