This two-day event on April 28 and 29 will feature CDA’s Dam Safety Reviews Workshop, exciting presentations on Dam Safety Improvement Projects, and a tour of hydroelectric facilities in Niagara Falls.
The Program:
Day 1: Dam Safety Reviews (DSR) Workshop
Day 2 AM: Presentations on Dam Safety Improvement Projects
Day 2 PM: Tour of the Ontario Power Generation’s Sir Adam Beck Generating Station complex, including Canada’s only Pump Generating Station (PGS).
Day 1 (April 28): Dam Safety Review Workshop
The DSR workshop aims to familiarize participants with the contents of the CDA Technical Bulletin on Dam Safety Reviews. By the end of the day, participants will understand the DSR process and what their role is during a DSR. The DSR workshop combines formal presentations with breakout sessions in which participants are engaged in hands-on exercises. An effort is made to have the different stakeholders represented at each table so that dam owners, regulators, consulting engineers, managers and others can learn from each other. The learning outcome from each breakout exercise is carefully considered, and a debriefing is held for the whole group after the breakout sessions. The workshop has been consistently regarded as effective and engaging.
Day 2 (April 29): Presentations and Tour
Canadian dam industry has been active in dam rehabilitation field and is expected to continue in this path. With the aging infrastructure, changing regulatory requirements, and better understanding of hazards/consequences associated with dams, the needs for dam repair/rehabilitation works are becoming critical to ensure safety of dams and to protect public, properties, and environment. The second day will feature presentations on dam rehabilitation projects in Canada and highlight the importance of Dam Safety Reviews in identifying and addressing the hazards and consequences. The day will wrap up with the tour of Sir Adam Beck Generating Station.
