Hello CSAO members, as a member of the CSAO Executive (Gamma Chapter Rep) for the past two years it has been a great experience which has given me a better understanding of the work each executive member puts in to make sure the organization stays current with education, conferences, updating of website to make information more accessible to members. Executive put in a good deal of their time to liaison with various organizations; OHA, AAMI, AORN, and HISSMM just to name a few, in hopes to achieve some of our common goals.

After beginning my term as President on September 2010, the executive committee sat down and discussed how we could achieve some common ideals; education, increased awareness and participation by members in the Gamma Chapter. As a result of these discussions we felt it would benefit the Chapter and create interest in having and participating in site visits for our meetings to various institutions within the Chapter. This was accomplished with a site visit to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

Welcome to the new 2012/2013 CSAO year. This is my first newsletter as the Theta Chapter President. I would like to take a moment to thank our Past President, Colleen Landers for her many years of dedication and commitment to see the Theta chapter not only grow, but thrive on successful educational initiatives, increasing membership and her drive to interest new people to serve on the Theta chapter executive. Colleen is not only our past president, but also our new Education Coordinator. I would also like to welcome back to the executive, Nancy Aelick, as the new Theta Chapter Vice President and Tammy Bennardo as our new treasurer. I especially want to welcome Jeffery Phelps as the Theta Chapter secretary. He is new to our executive this year and is already doing great work for our chapter. I also want to thank Nicole Robinson for the years spent as a hard working member of our executive team. She was largely responsible for pulling together the May education days that we enjoyed in Sturgeon Falls and North Bay.

In keeping with our association goals and tradition, the ETA Chapter tried to maintain or increase its ability to support or actively participate in the educational process being at the chapter level or as part of the provincial activities. The ETA Chapter has, for the past many years, offered the facility for the spring and fall sessions being at St. Michael's or Mount Sinai hospital. As well, education was the main goal when organizing the chapter meetings. Some translated in our members' exposure to new technologies where other events open unique opportunities for learning new skills and knowledge. Since the last annual report, the ETA Chapter held three meetings scheduled and delivered at the most acceptable and opportune times and locations making sure that all these were accepted by the membership.

The Canadian Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Surveillance System (CJDSS), which is operated by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), was established in 1998 as a national surveillance system for human prion diseases, often collectively called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). The main public health goals of the CJDSS are to: * Identify and characterize all human prion diseases in Canada; * Better understand their epidemiology and biological causes; * Develop better options for their rapid and accurate diagnosis; * Ultimately protect the health of Canadians by reducing risks of prion disease transmission. The CJDSS works directly to support patients, families and healthcare providers dealing with this difficult disease through education and sharing of information. The CJDSS Healthcare Provider Newsletter is one way in which this is done. This issue of the CJDSS Healthcare Provider Newsletter includes an update on the number of CJD cases identified in Canada; a brief report on the recent discovery of a second case of variant CJD (vCJD); a feature article on genetics in CJD diagnosis and surveillance; an important announcement concerning new laboratory test options; and a "You Asked Us" section where we respond to some of the questions we frequently receive.

Hospitals could save millions of taxpayer dollars—and tons of waste and emissions—by making some small changes, and some larger, more expensive changes, to "green" their operating rooms, says an analysis from the University of Western Ontario’s medical school, published Monday in The Canadian Medical Association Journal. The report says hospitals produce a huge amount of waste, and as much as 33 per cent is generated in operating rooms. A single operation, for example, can produce as much garbage as a family of four would create in a week, some estimates suggest. (The statistics date back to 2009.)
