PRESIDENT'S REPORT
 Congratulations to all Medical Device Reprocessing Technicians for Central Service Week occurring this year from October 8-14, 2012. I hope everyone has or will take time to celebrate this in your respective department. It is a time to celebrate your chosen specialty and be recognized for the contribution you make to safe patient care. Learn More...  As I move into the Past President position on the CSAO provincial Executive, I look forward to assisting the new president and executive in their roles over the next two years. Having been on the executive for 12 years, I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience and as Past President, I will be assisting the executive in decisions, education and conference planning, because as a busy executive, with full-time jobs, we all need support to manage the workload of the CSAO. Passing on the knowledge you gain while having a position on the executive is critical to the association.

The Delta Chapter currently has 54 students in attendance. This course will be completed on October 2. The ETA Chapter has closed with 69 students for the October course. The Sigma course has been relocated to Windsor, and has increased to 57 students for the November course. The Gamma chapter course will be held in Peterbough in February. The ETA Chapter course will be held in Toronto in March. The Delta Chapter course will be held in Hamilton in April, and the Theta/Lambda Chapter course will be held in Timmins for winter/spring of 2013. We will keep you updated to the numbers that are beginning to fill up for these classes. There are 18 Recertification, and eight Distance Students registered for the 2012/13, year to date. We would also like to welcome Dianne Keast as Education Director and Kym Drouillard as Course Coordinator for the Sigma Chapter. CHAPTER REPORT
The Delta Chapter is planning a Halloween celebration at St. Josephs Healthcare Hospital in Hamilton, on October 30. We will be touring their brand-new MDRD facilities, and look forward to networking with members of our chapter from surrounding area hospitals. We are organizing a light dinner and lots of treats for our membership.

Learn More... The ETA Chapter was once again able to send many of its members to this year's annual conference. The conference was one of the best in recent memory with many great speakers, deserving award winners, a new and funny MC and a great sounding band for the dinner. Attendance was a bit higher from last year and that is encouraging as we are hoping to get even more members join our Chapter and Provincial group.

Accreditation Canada's Standards for the Reprocessing and Sterilization of Reusable Medical Devices were prepared in response to requests from health service organizations, regulators, and governments for a set of national standards. They have been developed in conjunction with the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and incorporate many elements from existing CSA standards.
Learn More...  The complexity and temperature sensitivity of flexible endoscopes makes cleaning followed by sterilization/disinfection difficult. While sterilization may be optimal, the minimum acceptable standard for reprocessing endoscopes is high level disinfection (HLD). At all times, cleaning must precede high level disinfection. Endoscopic accessories do require sterilization. Whenever flexible endoscopes are reprocessed, those involved in the reprocessing must adhere to the validated protocol recommended by the manufacturer of the endoscope.

Today’s demand for more complex devices has led to the introduction of devices that are difficult to reprocess. These design advances are challenging the sterile processing units in hospitals. Often device manufacturers do not give enough consideration to the "human factors" involved in reprocessing a device, including working conditions and individual characteristics of sterile processing personnel which affect work behavior. Complex medical device designs and other enhancements that do not take these human factor considerations into account may make it difficult, or even impossible, for hospitals to clean, disinfect, and re-sterilize these devices in an effective manner.

The discovery of bacteria-resistant polymers is being hailed as a potential biomedical breakthrough that could be used to create coatings for surgical and hospital devices, reducing the risk of infection. Researchers with the University of Nottingham tested the new class of polymers on the surfaces of some medical instruments and found that they effectively repelled bacteria.

The members of the Medical Device Reprocessing Advisory Panel ’12 (MDRAP’12) selected the topics to cover and provided summaries for this publication.

This has become the biggest challenge facing managers and business owners. Growing up in very different times have led each generation to viewing the workplace with very different expectations – and that spells trouble. Gabriel Draven, a reporter for The Globe & Mail, wrote in March 2004 that Canadian companies better start accepting this generational shift as reality because it’s going to dramatically change how businesses are run and managed. No longer is a steady paycheck the motivating force. Employees from Generation X and Generation Y want something completely different from their jobs.
Learn More... We are very pleased to put out the October 2012 e-newsletter. I am happy to once again work in the Communications Portfolio and focus on this newsletter for another two years. This year's conference was another successful couple of days. The speakers were all very informative, the awards dinner recognized all the worthy recipients and the entertainment was the best so far, with a great band and a really funny MC. I cannot wait until next year. This e-newsletter will provide updates and information from the Executive Committee, chapter reports and other articles and links related to Standards, Conferences and Educational opportunities.
