The Sample Display that one sees at the Expo every year first started in 1924 when the League held its first fruit Sample Cutting event at the Del Monte Hotel in San Francisco with a "cutting bee" in which different companies products were judged. The purpose of this event was to improve and standardize quality. The products are no longer judged at this event but are presented as a "showcase" of products processed by CLFP members, showing the diversity and premium quality of California grown and processed foods. The first vegetable Sample Cutting event was first held in 1929.
