FDA Proposes Changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a proposed rule for updating the Nutritional Facts Panel. If adopted, the rule would require the declaration of the percent daily value (%DV) for added sugars, and change the verbiage of the footnote on the Nutrition Facts Panel to explain what %DV means.
FDA indicated that the proposal to include the percent daily value for added sugars will provide consumers with more information that they can use to make informed choices about the foods they purchase. The percent daily value would be based on the recommendation that the daily intake of calories from added sugars not exceed 10 percent of total calories.
FDA is also proposing to change the current footnote on the Nutrition Facts Panel to help consumers understand the percent daily value concept. The statement on the label would be shorter than the current footnote to allow for more space on the label and state that "The percent daily value (%DV) tells you how much a nutrient in a serving of food contributes to a daily diet. 2,000 calories a day is used for general nutrition advice."
To obtain more information regarding the proposed changes, consult the FDA web site: www.fda.gov, select the "food" option and then select "Proposed Changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel." FDA is accepting public comments on the proposed rule until October 13, 2015.
