Water Restrictions May be Extended Next Year If Drought Continues

California Governor Jerry Brown signed an executive order last month that would extend water use restrictions in urban areas until Oct. 31, 2016, should the state’s drought continue through January 2016. On Dec. 7, the California State Water Resources Control Board held a public workshop on urban water conservation at Cal/EPA in Sacramento to solicit public input on extending the emergency water conservation regulations. CLFP and other organizations representing the agricultural and industrial sectors testified at the workshop about the importance of maintaining an exemption for agriculture and process water from any extended restrictions. The board also has invited CLFP to participate in a small stakeholder group of leaders in the water community to obtain input should the emergency conservation regulation be extended, as well as to discuss possible development of a long-term conservation regulatory strategy.
