Diane M. Barrett FRUIT & VEGETABLE FACULTY FELLOWSHIP
Diane M. Barrett FRUIT & VEGETABLE FACULTY FELLOWSHIP
Department of Food Science & Technology, University of California, Davis
The Diane M. Barrett Fruit and Vegetable Faculty Fellowship Fund in the Department of Food Science and Technology at UC Davis was established to honor Cooperative Extension Specialist Dr. Diane Barrett for her many contributions to the fruit and vegetable industries of California. The first fellowship recipient will be announced this week.
Goal
Ensuring UC Davis continues to meet the research and educational needs of the members of the California fruit and vegetable processing industry.
Purpose of the fellowship
- The faculty fellowship will support faculty in the Department of Food Science and Technology working on issues relevant to the fruit and vegetable processing industry.
- Income from this endowment may be used at the discretion of the faculty fellow to support research, outreach and/or graduate student work in multiple areas of interest to the members of the California League of Food Processors (CLFP) and similar companies and industries. The fellow may work on food processing technologies, energy efficiency, breeding of crops relevant to processing or other topics relevant to industry.
- The faculty fellow shall also serve as liaison to this industry and is expected to participate in industry-relevant meetings as a representative of UC Davis and the Department of Food Science and Technology.
- Fellows will be selected by faculty peers in the department for a term of five years. The fellowship may be renewed.
Establishing the fellowship
- The money to create the fellowship fund was made available by Dr. Diane Barrett, fruit and vegetable products Cooperative Extension specialist in the Department of Food Science and Technology, from income she generated through industry short courses.
- The initial transfer was $400,000, and the payment is estimated at 4 percent of principal. Without additional gifts, the Barrett Fellow would receive about $16,000 annually.
- Industry members are invited to participate and honor Diane with a contribution to the Fellowship Fund. Our "stretch goal" is to reach $1.5 million and establish an Endowed Professorship. An Endowed Professorship would provide approximately $60,000 per year to the holder and could cover expenses for a graduate student.
