Obama Signs GMO Labeling Bill

On July 29, President Obama signed into law a bill that will require food companies to label products containing genetically modified ingredients and establishes a federal labeling standard.

Two weeks ago Congress passed legislation that would require for the first time that most food packages carry a text label, symbol or an electronic code that indicates if the product contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has two years to write the rules implementing the legislation, which preempts a Vermont GMO labeling law that took effect July 1. Food industry advocates had wanted to find a national solution to state-by-state laws.

CLFP is a member of the Coalition for Safe Affordable Food, which was active in calling for the bill’s passage in the House and Senate.
