CLFP elected new officers at its 2017 Annual Board of Directors meeting held April 20-21 in Sonoma. Janet Edwards with the Musco Family Olive Company was elected as the 2017/2018 Chair, Tim Nelson of Seneca Foods Corporation as First Vice Chair and Nick Kastle of VSP Products as Second Vice Chair.
 
 
   
CLFP will hold its Ninth Annual Capitol Day on June 20 in Sacramento. CLFP holds this event each year as part of its work in building relationships with legislators. The event is an excellent forum for CLFP member company representatives to meet with legislators and regulators to discuss the issues affecting the food processing industry. It’s also an opportunity for legislators to learn about the companies and people that support CLFP.

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) has forecasted statewide employment in the food processing sector to increase by more than eight percent, representing more than 196,000 jobs, by 2024. This is a relatively modest growth rate, but the estimate does not include all the jobs created in related sectors such as packaging, equipment, transportation and energy.
 
Due to significant increases in solar power generation and self-generation, and changes in management of the statewide electricity grid, Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) and Southern California Edison (SCE) have proposed changes to their Time of Use (TOU) rates.

Announcements
The California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Food Safety Branch will conduct a number of classes in May and June for food processors.
 
The Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) is holding a pre-Gas Transportation & Storage Rate Case (2019 GTS) meeting on May 11 to discuss the upcoming 2019 filing.

CLFP has joined with the California Chamber of Commerce and a large coalition of business organizations in opposition to SB 562 (Lara; D-Bell Gardens/Atkins; D-San Diego), which creates a new single-payer, government-run health care system. Although the financing mechanism for SB 562 has not yet been specified, past legislative attempts at government-run health care have proposed major increases in payroll and income tax on businesses and individuals.
