After this month’s historic election, the nation and the state look toward major changes coming next year. Notably, President Trump will be the second President to ever serve non-consecutive terms – the first being Grover Cleveland in the late 19th century. This election will also bring a republican dominated federal government. The U.S. Senate be controlled by the republican party, and at the time of writing this article, it appears the U.S. House of representatives will be as well. This is significant as all three federal branches of government, Executive, Legislative, and Judicial, will be controlled by a republican majority. Conversely, here in California, we will continue to see a democratic majority.
California hasn’t wasted any time in preparing for the coming administrative/Presidential change. Governor Newsom has announced a special session in December to prepare for any legal challenges that may arise between California and Trump administration. In Trump’s previous term, California sued the federal government more than 100 times on issues such as immigration, reproductive rights, and gun control. The governor’s message calls for legislative action – providing additional resources to the Department of Justice (DOJ) to defend against federal lawsuits.
