Non Union Employers Beware: OSHA Has Just Become A Union Organizer

In a little-publicized letter of interpretation, dated April 5, 2013, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced for the first time that during an OSHA inspection of non-union worksites, employees can be represented by anyone selected by the employees including outside union agents. In so doing, the letter, issued to the Steelworkers Union earlier this year, OSHA Deputy Assistant Secretary Richard Fairfax gave the green light to allowing union officials and community organizers to serve as the "employee representative" and thus accompany OSHA inspectors when doing inspections of non-union workplaces. This development provides a welcoming open door to many union organizers in those industries sought after by labor organizations.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GO-BIZ) was created by Governor Brown to serve as California’s single point of contact for economic development and job creation efforts. The Permit Assistance Unit provides comprehensive permit and regulatory compliance assistance for businesses in California and serves as a central source for permit guidance. The Permit Assistance Unit also manages CalGOLD, an online permit assistance website (www.calgold.ca.gov) that provides a listing of federal, state, and local permits and how to obtain information about those permits.

2013 CLFP Capitol Day

The Maraschino Cherry

The maraschino cherry of today has a history dating back a few hundred years ago in Dalmatia coast (present day Croatia). It was there that the marasca cherry grew wild (a sour, black cherry) and people would preserve them by soaking them a liqueur called maraschino, made from the cherry’s juice, pits and leaves. The maraschino cherry was a delicacy for many well to do Europeans and this is where traveling Americans got their first taste of the treat and started importing them to the United States in the late 1800s.
