More Command and Control for Industry in Senate Bill 350

Senator Kevin de León’s legislation, Senate Bill 350, will ratchet up energy restrictions in California if it is approved by the Legislature and signed by Governor Brown. SB 350 recently passed a Senate policy committee, despite concerns from business representatives and Republican legislators that it will drive up energy costs, cost jobs and place too much power in the hands of unelected bureaucrats in California agencies.

CPUC to Consider Raising Renewable Percentage in Latest RPS Case

A new California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) case is aimed at exploring an increase in the state’s renewables portfolio standard (RPS). In addition to possibly increasing the RPS goals beyond the current 33 percent, the proceeding will consider updating the process to evaluate bids, using more distributed generation to meet the RPS and factoring greenhouse-gas emissions reduction into procurement mechanisms. The CPUC has already begun to outline ways to refine implementation of the renewables portfolio standard program.

Greg Estep Elected Chair at CLFP 2015 Annual Meeting

Dan Sroufe’s year as CLFP chairman was capped off at CLFP'S 2015 Annual Meeting held April 23-24 at Carmel Valley Ranch. During the board of directors meeting, the board approved the new slate of officers. The 2015-2016 chair is Greg Estep, Olam Spices and Vegetable Ingredients; the first vice chair is Pat Coe, ConAgra Foods; and the second vice chair is Bert Fleischer, the Hilmar Cheese Co. The board also approved $32,000 in funding for the CLFP scholarship program, including adding Cal Poly Pomona to the program. CLFP staff provided an overview of bills under consideration in the legislature and a summary of current issues, including regulatory issues such as Proposition 65, water policy and energy.
