The California Department of Water Resources ("DWR" or "Department") released draft emergency regulations on February 23 governing the preparation, evaluation, and implementation of groundwater sustainability plans ("GSPs" or "Plans") as well as coordination agreements among Groundwater Sustainability Agencies ("GSAs"). The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act ("SGMA") directs DWR to adopt final regulations by June 1, 2016.

The deadline for introducing new bills in the California Legislature was February 19. A total of 2,090 bills were introduced with over 1,800 of them introduced in the final week before the deadline. Legislative policy hearings will begin in March, and CLFP staff is currently reviewing these new bills and assessing their impact on the food processing industry.

Food Processing Expo 2016 saw a record number of both attendees and exhibitors, Feb. 17-18, at the Sacramento Convention Center. Attendance at this popular annual event, produced by the California League of Food Processors (CLFP), has been growing steadily in recent years. This year the Expo attracted nearly 2,100 attendees and 270 exhibitors.
