I recently received a referral for a five-year old who had a chronic foot ulcer secondary to trauma. At first, I thought the referral was an error. Surely, this must be a 55-year old, 65-year old or some-other-decade-ending-in-five-year old patient with diabetes, peripheral arterial disease or some other comorbidity contributing to delayed wound healing. I was wrong. 

Science and quantification are long overdue in the orthotic work that we do on a daily basis. The process of capturing the anatomical arch, creating a positive model, and managing arch fill has been solely a decision of those trained in the art. There cannot be an index of exactly how much correction we are using in a custom foot orthotic without quantification.

Chronic ankle conditions affect approximately 20% of Australian adults. Although there is a plethora of research on chronic hip and knee conditions, there is limited understanding of the impact of ankle problems. Thus, the significance of chronic ankle conditions is not clear. The aim of this study was to compare self-reported function, disability, instability, physical activity and quality of life (QoL) between adults with and without ankle symptoms.

There are some hygiene tasks that are second nature, like showering consistently and brushing your teeth every day. Then there are the hygiene tasks, like cutting your nails, that can easily be forgotten. But should you be putting off trimming your nails? According to experts, not really: They say you should actually be cutting your nails every week.
