The bunion deformity, technically termed Hallux Abductovalgus or HAV for short, is much more than just a bump of bone growing on the foot. Technically, it is a 3-dimensional positional misalignment of the entire 1st ray, which includes the great toe and the first metatarsal (Figure 1). Simply put, it’s a biomechanical misfit between the bones that control your big toe — but not just in 1 direction or on one plane.

Hallux valgus, lesser toe deformity, and muscle weakness of the toe flexors contribute to falls in older people. This study aimed to examine the differences in toe flexor strength and foot morphology in older people requiring long-term care due to changes in the way they mobilize in everyday life.

Many patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are treated with veno-venous ECMO (VV-ECMO) and prone positioning to optimize oxygenation. However, this combination can result in lower extremity tissue necrosis, especially without adequate offloading.
