First observed during the Roman Empire, devices made of metals and leather controlled hemorrhagic bleeding from extremity amputations during combat. Later coined the tourniquet, these devices were a first-line life-saving measure. An intractable plantar keratoma (IPK) is a conical thickening of the epidermis’ stratum corneum and a common cause of foot pain that can have a significant detrimental impact on the mobility, quality of life and independence of individuals.
