Metatarsal fractures account for five to six percent of all fractures, with approximately 68 percent involving the fifth metatarsal, usually due to acute trauma or repetitive chronic stress.1 Athletes are particularly prone to Jones and stress fractures from over-use, pivoting and shifting. Runners and jumpers are also at significant risk for these fractures. According to Cakir and colleagues, fifth metatarsal fractures account for more than 50 percent of traumatic metatarsal fractures, which is comparable in athletes, who typically present with acute lateral foot pain after a twisting injury or landing from a jump.`
