Diabetes increases patient mortality rates by two- to four-fold compared to those without diabetes. These rates increase another two-fold in patients with a diabetic foot ulceration (DFU). Mortality rates in patients with a DFU range from 10 percent at 16 months to 24 percent at five years. Most fatalities in these patients occur due to cardiovascular disease, specifically a myocardial infarction.

Ankle sprains account for a large number of acute sport-related injuries presenting to the emergency department with a cost of over $1,000 per lateral ankle sprain. The ankle joint is the most common injured body site in an athletic population. The sports with the highest prevalence of ankle sprains have been reported as men’s and women’s basketball, as well as women’s track, women’s soccer, and women’s field hockey.

Compartment syndrome is a well-known surgical emergency within the scope of Podiatry.  However, cases can be atraumatic and present without the traditional findings of pain, pallor, paresthesia, pulselessness, paralysis, and poikilothermia. Thus, posing a diagnostic dilemma for clinicians, leading to delayed surgical intervention and poor outcomes.

Ankle joint distraction (AJD) has been described to be a valuable joint-sparing alternative to arthrodesis or arthroplasty; however, clinical endpoints associated to this surgical intervention are lacking. The current case report describes clinical and biomechanical outcome measures of ankle joint distraction in a 14-year-old patient with severe haemophilia A.
