2017-2018 California Contribution Limits

The California campaign contribution limits have been revised to account for inflation. The new limits are effective as of January 1, 2017, for elections held in 2017 and 2018.

I.Limits on contributions to General Purpose Committees.The limit on contributions to General Purpose Committees (PACs) that make contributions to State Candidates (Legislative, Statewide and Governor) has been increased to $7,300 per calendar year.

II.Limits on contributions to Political Parties.The limit on contributions to Political Parties for making contributions to State Candidates has increased to $36,500 per year.There is no limit for non-candidate support.

III.Limits on contributions to State Candidates.Corporations, PACs and persons may contribute directly to candidate committees.The 2017/2018 limits are:

IV.Contributions to Elected Officeholders.Contributions to LEGISLATIVE and STATEWIDEofficeholders for the election held prior to 2017, which have net outstanding debt, are subject to the contribution limits for that election.

V.Post-Election Contributions.Contributions cannot be made to or accepted by a candidate after the date of the election unless that candidate has net outstanding debts for that election.

VI.Contributions to Officeholder Committees.Contributions made to officeholder committees must be aggregated with any other contribution for that same candidate for any elected state office that the officeholder is seeking.The contributions, when aggregated, may not exceed the contribution limits applicable to the election the candidate is seeking.
