We hope you had a fantastic National Case Management Week. CMSA has spent the past week helping to communicate the tremendous value case managers bring to the successful delivery of healthcare to employers, payers, providers, regulators and consumers.
Healthcare professionals practicing as case managers have always known the value of planning, coordinating, and facilitating care and that these efforts produce improved health outcomes. For many years, case managers have been functioning in the background, rarely receiving any recognition for their contributions to improved patient outcomes.
The advent of value-based purchasing, readmission prevention, and bundled payments have shined a light on what case managers do and how they impact care and cost. Guided by the CMSA Standards of Practice for Case Management, case managers are dedicated to consistent ethical practices that keep the patient the focal point. In addition, the literature has shown that evidence-based guidelines and other clinical standards are linked to financial outcomes, which translates to value.
“Case Managers are central to [a value-based environment]’s success. It’s vitally important that CMs manage the overall care of the patients we serve. Our unique training and skillset allow us to place the clinical, social, and economic needs of the patients and obtain consensus in the direction of the care being provided.” ~Toresha (Torie) Peterson, RN, MS, CCM
During this month of case management appreciation, be sure to make your value known and celebrate the many challenges faced and overcome this past year as you navigated the journey to health for your patients, their families and support systems. We appreciate YOU!
