This year’s National Case Management Week is Oct. 11 – 17, and we want to let the world know about case managers – who we are, what we do, and why we are important.

Case Management Week has become embedded into the community as an annual, week-long celebration of this essential health care practice. CMSA has been instrumental in that process, bringing to light the important work of case managers in local communities and on the national level.

CMSA recently unveiled the logo and the theme of this week-long celebration of case managers, which will be used this year and in future years. View the logo and learn more about Case Management Week at the link!

"Washington Update" will focus on current policy events that have been shaping the legislative landscape of the 114th Congress and beyond. After the 2014 elections, in which the Republicans gained a stronger hold in the House and took back the Senate, Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) have used their leadership positions in their respective chambers to push a conservative agenda on the Hill while tackling major health policy challenges.

Come to Capitol Hill with fellow CMSA members, CMSA’s Public Policy Committee and Board of Directors to play a direct role in the legislative process by meeting with your House and Senate representatives. In addition, you’ll be able to highlight the critical role that case managers play in health care delivery, explore how to utilize your local networks for grassroots legislative success and ensure that case managers are speaking for case managers.

Attendance for the 2015 Day on the Hill is open to all current CMSA members at no additional cost. If you are a CMSA member who is passionate about association issues and wants to make a difference by advocating with fellow health care professionals from across the country, you won’t want to miss this event! Registration is coming next week!

Last month’s article discussed value-based purchasing (VBP). The day after I wrote the article, I attended a seminar organized by the California Association of Health Plans entitled "Using Data to Improve Healthcare." It definitely reinforced the principles of VBP, and the need for and importance of data to prove its effectiveness.

Government and large purchasers want cost and quality data to drive affordability; clinicians want patient-specific data to improve treatments; and health plans and providers are working on integrating medical-record data to effectively manage care. The seminar focused on how these three efforts are dependent on data and how that data can be used to meet each of their goals.

On July 1, 2015, CMS released proposed updates to the "Two-Midnight" rule regarding when inpatient admissions are appropriate for payment under Medicare Part A.  These changes would continue CMS’ long-standing emphasis on the importance of a physician’s medical judgment in meeting the needs of Medicare beneficiaries.  These updates were included in the calendar year (CY) 2016 Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System (OPPS) proposed rule.
