CMSA’s Career & Knowledge Pathways (CKP) educational program fills a longstanding gap in case management education. Theoretical
content has been available for many years, but practical instruction of
basic concepts of case management, as well as skills opportunities, have
been left to the individual case manager and employers to determine and
deliver. These circumstances have led to great variation in educational
quality, content, and case management skill sets across the healthcare
continuum.
The debut CKP course, CMSA Standards of Practice: The Foundation for Professional Excellence in Coordination of Care Across the Continuum,
was developed by thought leaders in case management to contribute to
the basic understanding of the standards that govern your practice.

Supported by funding from NACDS FOUNDATION, a new eight-hour

Interviewing for Health Care Professionals: A Sensible Approach, APhA
Press, Washington, D.C., 2013) to motivational interviewing. The program can be completed
within a three-month window and is approved for 8 hours of nurse,
pharmacist and physician continuing education credit. It is based on
the authors' 25 years of experience in teaching motivational interviewing to health care
professionals. It costs $225.

Senior Vice President, TCS Healthcare Technologies
While researching last month’s article on Healthcare
Trends and Predictions for 2016, I was amazed at the
statistics and the overall breadth of "Big Data." For example, the data generated in 2015 was
equal to 120,000 times the total of all previously written words in
history. Or that more
data has been created in the past two years than
in the entire previous history of the human race. I found these statistics totally amazing! So I decided to do more research on this
phenomenon.

As part of the U.S. government’s urgent response to the epidemic of
overdose deaths, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday issued new recommendations for prescribing opioid medications
for chronic pain, excluding cancer, palliative, and end-of-life care.
The CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, United States, 2016 will help primary care providers ensure the safest and most effective treatment for their patients.
The United States is currently experiencing an epidemic of
prescription opioid overdose. Increased prescribing and sales of
opioids—a quadrupling since 1999— helped create and fuel this epidemic.
"More than 40 Americans die each day from prescription opioid
overdoses, we must act now," said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H.
"Overprescribing opioids—largely for chronic pain—is a key driver of
America’s drug-overdose epidemic. The guideline will give physicians and
patients the information they need to make more informed decisions
about treatment."

Next step to address access, affordability, and innovation in prescription drugs
On March 8, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)
announced a proposed rule to test new models to improve how Medicare
Part B pays for prescription drugs and supports physicians and other
clinicians in delivering higher quality care. CMS values public input
and comments as part of the rulemaking process, and looks forward to
continuing to work with stakeholders through the rulemaking process to
maximize the value and learning from the proposed tests.
Medicare Part B covers prescription drugs that are administered in a
physician’s office or hospital outpatient department, such as cancer
medications, injectables like antibiotics, or eye care treatments. The
proposed Medicare Part B Model would test new ways to support physicians
and other clinicians as they choose the drug that is right for their
patients.
