Special Announcement

We are gearing up for a value-packed 2024 CMSA Annual Conference, June 4-7 in historic Providence, RI. In addition to the jammed-packed days of education and networking, Providence offers a delightful array of attractions that cater to both history buffs and art enthusiasts. Visitors should not miss the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, which houses an impressive collection spanning diverse cultures and time periods. The historic Benefit Street, known as the "Mile of History," provides a picturesque stroll through architectural marvels from the colonial era.

Providence offers a rich variety of activities and attractions beyond its historical sites and museums. Here are some additional experiences to enjoy while visiting:

WaterFire Providence: This award-winning sculpture by Barnaby Evans installed on the three rivers of downtown Providence has been enchanting visitors since 1994. First full lighting of 2024 is scheduled for June 1st; additional dates TBA.

Roger Williams Park Zoo: One of the oldest zoos in the country, this park features a wide range of animals from around the world, set in a beautiful 40-acre parkland.

Federal Hill: Known as Little Italy, this neighborhood offers an abundance of dining options, especially Italian cuisine, along with boutiques and galleries.

Rhode Island State House: Tour the magnificent state capitol building, known for its beautiful architecture and the fourth-largest self-supporting marble dome in the world.

John Brown House Museum: Explore the opulent residence of merchant John Brown, a reminder of Providence’s wealthy past, offering insight into late colonial and early American life in Rhode Island.

Culinary Scene: Providence is noted for its vibrant culinary scene, including farm-to-table restaurants, seafood and international cuisine. The city's food culture is a reflection of its diverse communities.

Thayer Street: Stroll through this lively area near Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, which is bustling with shops, cafes, bookstores and street art.

The Providence Athenaeum: Book lovers should visit this independent, member-supported library that has been a cultural hub since 1753.

The Case Manager's Guide to Antimicrobial Stewardship

Tuesday, April 30 at 12 p.m. Eastern

Pre-Approved CEs: 1 Hour RN and CCM

Antimicrobial resistant infections are present in acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and experienced in outpatient/ambulatory settings. The only way to slow the resistance to antibiotics is to practice and reinforce antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).

As part of the multidisciplinary team, case managers can support AMS by educating patients on the dangers of overuse and misuse of antibiotics, facilitation, and coordination of needed diagnostics to determine if antibiotics are indicated, ensure patients understand their antibiotic prescription and are adherent with the treatment protocol, and collaborate with all members of the interdisciplinary team for optimal health outcomes.

Presenter: Rebecca Perez, MSN, RN, CCM, FCM

Free to ALL! This presentation is generously sponsored by Seres Therapeutics.

Ethical Considerations in Surrogate Decision Making: Family Meeting Guide

Thursday, May 16 at 12 p.m. Eastern

Pre-Approved CEs: 1 Hour RN, SW, and CCM ETHICS

Surrogate decision making raises many ethical issues. In all settings, decisions regarding goals of care often must be made by either elected proxies or next-of-kin on behalf of patients. These conversations, often involving high stakes and occurring in high states of arousal, are rife with ethical concerns. This session will present a framework for recognizing and managing ethical considerations, including legal topics, cultural issues and self-awareness of implicit bias and assumptions, and offer a practical guide to conducting holistic, patient-centric and ethically sound meetings.

Presenter: Alixis Van Horn, RN, MSN, APRN, ACPHN

Free to members. $40 for non-members.

Chapter Connection

It was the case of the whodunit! Central Indiana CMSA partnered with Hooverwood Living to host a night of food, alcoholic drinks, networking and a murder mystery that only case managers could solve! Every attendee (member and nonmember) was a suspect, even the Board of Directors! The actors had everyone laughing the entire suspense-filled show, especially when the suspect was identified! It was a great event, to say the least!

Specialized ICUs Reduce Readmissions
Kindred Healthcare Operating, LLCĀ®
Intensive Care Units in long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) treat many of the same conditions that traditional ICUs treat, but are designed to do so for a longer period of time.  Because LTACHs like Kindred Hospitals specialize in treating medically complex patients, they are able to achieve lower readmission rates for these patients than traditional hospitals can.
