On Thursday, October 31 at 11:00 AM CST, join Kathleen Fraser, MSN, MHA, RN-BC, CCM, CRRN, for CMSA's CM Spotlight Webinar Series for October on "Acute Care and Worker's Comp Case Managers; a Necessary Alliance." Through its representation, advocacy and education functions, the Case Management Society of America (CMSA) has been an organizing force setting the practice direction for the discipline of case management. CMSA promotes practice that is evidence-based and discourages the use of practices which, though popular or widely accepted, are either not beneficial or are contrary to the CMSA Standards of Practice for Case Management (SoP). While the increasing emphasis on care coordination by providers and payers has opened professional debate regarding the models being used in hospitals today, CMSA intends to clarify its position on hospital case management practice through this white paper initiative and urges hospital leaders to seek solutions that more effectively address the needs of our most vulnerable hospitalized patients. CMSA's Standards of Practice for Case Management, 2016 revision, provides practice guidelines for the case management industry and its diverse stakeholders. The impetus for the 2016 revision of the Standards is the need to emphasize the professional nature of the practice and role of the case manager. The 2016 Standards of Practice contain information about case management including an updated definition, practice settings, roles and responsibilities, case management process, philosophy and guiding principles, as well as the standards and how they are demonstrated.

BY Connie Commander, RN-BC, MBA, CCM, ABDA, CPUR At the Past Presidents’ Panel this June in Las Vegas, all the participants were asked specific questions, based upon our own expertise and experience. With our multiple years of hands-on leadership, we realized that many of the attendees might like to hear our perspective in building successful case management departments, no matter the venue. My specific expertise has been in multiple settings, but for this publication, I wanted to share some insight into acute care case management departments. I have consulted in multiple acute care settings across the nation. There are several things that I feel lead to the success of the department. One critical aspect is to whom in the C-suite the department reports directly. Without the support of this level of administration, the department could be set to fail. I have reported through the nursing officer, the chief financial officer and the chief medical officer at any one time. My preference is to report through the CFO directly, with strong dotted lines to the CNO and the CMO. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on September 26 issued a final rule that empowers patients to make informed decisions about their care as they are discharged from acute care into post-acute care (PAC), a process called “discharge planning.” In addition to improving quality by improving these care transitions, the rule supports CMS’ interoperability efforts by promoting the seamless exchange of patient information between health care settings, and ensuring that a patient’s health care information follows them after discharge from a hospital or PAC provider.
