Chief Executive Officer's Notes
PCOC Legislative Days are soon approaching on April 4 and 5 in Sacramento, and I look forward to seeing you all there. One of the most important functions of PCOC is representing your interests related to legislative and regulatory impacts to our industry. At the time I’m writing this article, we are still awaiting word of potential legislation related to rodenticides. We are also closely monitoring regulatory concerns regarding product use and surface water as well as fumigation. As Mike Bullert and I have been meeting with Districts around the State, we’re reminding folks that your engagement is critical to letting our elected representatives know how you feel about these topics and more. Many of you have probably heard the phase “the early bird gets the worm”; well, the earlier we connect what we do to protecting people, property and our food supply, the more our message resonates. Remember, you can tell your story better than anybody, so see you in Sacramento. Chris Reardon Upcoming Events

Thank a Vendor Vendors are an integral part of the PCOC family. Without their participation and generosity many events, such as raffles, speakers, hole sponsorships, and fund raisers would be greatly impacted. Vendors come in all sizes, too. You’re probably familiar with the large chemical companies without whom our industry would be markedly different. And what would the industry be like without the value brought by distributors. But don’t forget about the smaller providers that constitute an important part of our membership. Some are small manufacturers with targeted product lines — such as traps, lights, mattress covers, exempt sprayables, repellents, and tools, to name a few. Some don’t specialize in pest management. They provide uniforms, fuel, credit card processing, and goods and services not usually thought of as one of our industry suppliers. Vendors provide membership numbers and much needed financial support for PCOC. Generally, all they ask is that you give them a look. If you have a choice between two providers and one is a PCOC member, if at all possible, use the member. Keeping it in the family is a strategy for the health of our industry and our association. So, the next time you see a vendor you don’t know, introduce yourself. See if they have a product that makes sense in your operation. And if you feel so moved, thank a vendor for their support. Legislative Update
This Wednesday, legislation was introduced in the U.S. Senate (S. 340) and U.S. House of Representatives (H.R. 953) that would clarify that federal law does not require the redundant and unfairly burdensome NPDES permits for already regulated pesticide applications. Assist us In Keeping Rodenticides in the Hands of Professionals Take the PCOC/NPMA Rodenticide Stewardship Training Course and earn CEUs. Commensal rodents are among the most significant public health pests that transmit disease, contaminate foods and damage infrastructure. Because of the substantial risk that rodents pose to our health and safety, their control is essential. Second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) are an advanced and indispensable tool that provides quick and complete management of rodent populations. SGARs require educated and trained professionals who have the knowledge and expertise to apply these products. In an effort to mitigate rodenticide exposure to non-target wildlife, the State of California strictly limited the use of SGARs to professionals only. To further our industry’s dedication to stewardship of rodenticides, the Pest Control Operators of California and the National Pest Management Association have teamed up to develop a two-part training course. This 60-minute course focuses on strategies and methods that will instill knowledge above and beyond state and federal educational requirements for the handling and application of rodenticides. Instructional topics include the importance of rodent management, commensal rodent biology and behavior, integrated rodent management, and the safe handling and application of anticoagulant rodenticides.
