News BriefsPest Control Operators of CaliforniaApril 2016EVP NOTES
Every year the California Pest Control Industry gathers together, in what is the largest annual convention and trade show for our industry in the country, outside of NPMA’s PestWorld. This year, we again have a program with increased value and format. Expo 2016 is June 23-25 at the Marriott Waikiki Beach Resort! Our Expo program is designed to provide interesting and informative speakers, an exhibit hall where PCOs can learn about new products, and also to provide CE hours. Friday is reserved for Continuing Education. Our terrific Keynote Speaker is Ken Grace, Professor and Dean at the University of Hawaii’s Entomology Department. Dr. Grace is a world-renowned expert on the management and behavior of structural pests. His presentation is entitled: "Travelling Pests in Paradise." One of the most important functions of this premier event is in the networking that takes place among the attendees: PCOC companies, manufacturers and suppliers. Several manufacturers and suppliers, for instance, take this time to roll out new products because of the high value placed on the Exhibit Hall. This year we again have a large Exhibit Hall with 66 booths...most have already been taken! The Installation Banquet is a time when we can all be proud of our association, as we celebrate the dedication and commitment of individuals who provide the leadership in PCOC. By the same token, celebrating what PCOC is all about: our members. EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION AND SPECIAL HOTEL ROOM RATE

IN THE NEWS
Dear PCOC Members, As you may be aware, California’s labor unions pushed hard for a ballot initiative in November to increase the minimum wage at a faster pace than the bill that was recently signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown. To provide context on what this bill means for you as an employer in California and potential off ramp provisions to it being fully enacted, we have prepared the following briefing. PCOC will continue to oppose the increase to $15 per hour but encourages its members to be aware of the increase schedule. We will continue to monitor this issue and should anything change, or an off ramp provision be enacted, we will notify you as soon as it becomes available. Symptoms of Substance Abuse How can you tell if an employee might have a substance abuse problem? He or she may have physical symptoms (chills, smell of alcohol, sweating, weight loss, physical deterioration); along with emotional (increased aggression, anxiety, burnout, denial, depression, paranoia); and/or behavioral symptoms (excessive talking, impaired coordination, irritability, lack of energy, limited attention span, poor motivation). It is important to note, however, that if an employee displays these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean he/she has a substance abuse problem. Signs that substance use may be a workplace hazard include:
If you suspect drug abuse, make sure you have documented incidents and performance problems before discussing the situation with the employee. An employee assistance program (EAP) can help managers and supervisors who suspect employee substance abuse deal with the situation appropriately, as well as help the individual find the treatment needed.
