Hire Heroes USA with Employer Tips on Building a Veteran Hiring Program

U.S. military members have some of the most advanced training in the world, making them highly-valuable job candidates. As a national nonprofit, Hire Heroes USA offers free career services to military members, veterans and military spouses. We also provide personalized services for military-friendly employers, too.  

As more veterans enter the workforce, Hire Heroes USA recognizes that employers may seek guidance on building a veteran hiring program within their organization. We’ve developed a suite of self-guided, e-learning modules to help employers educate their recruiters, hiring managers and human resources personnel on the best veteran hiring practices. Topics covered include: Understanding the Issue and Military Culture; How to Create the Program; Develop Recruiting Method; and, Onboard Programs and Retention.

Video courses are a brief 2-10 minutes to complement the busy schedule of a recruiter or hiring manager, but they can also be more in-depth for learners who have time to explore recommended partner videos and references from reputable colleges and organizations. If budgets permit and time is of the essence, Hire Heroes USA can also offer: Virtual Employer Training via WebEx for up to 100 attendees that is tailored to the company’s needs; or, a One-Day Employer Workshop to provide in-person training for staff at a desired location.  

The goal of these services is to bridge the gap between employers and veteran/military spouse job seekers. It is vital that employers have sustainable and successful veteran hiring initiatives, so education is as important as having effective recruiting services. Hire Heroes USA also provides several options to help employers get connected to veteran/military spouse talent:

Job Board:  Posting jobs on our job board is a great way to connect with veteran and military spouse job seekers. Our job posting packages are competitively priced and they ensure our ability to provide these services at no cost to job seekers. Employers can also advertise jobs in our Top Jobs Newsletter

Virtual Career Fairs:  Our quarterly Virtual Career Fairs connect employers with hundreds of job seekers nationwide, and even overseas. During these events, employers and job seekers can discuss career opportunities and qualifications without leaving their home or office.

Targeted Emails to Jobseekers: Our team can engage a large talent pool by sending targeted emails to job seekers who meet specific criteria, like a certain education or clearance level. Employers who wish to utilize this service, potentially reaching thousands of job seekers, set the email criteria. The cost they pay for the sponsored email is then based on the number of contacts that match the criteria.

Onward to Opportunity Program: Onward to Opportunity (O2O) is a partnership with the Institute for Veterans and Military Families (IVMF) at Syracuse University providing industry-specific training to military members, veterans and military spouses in select curricula. When training is complete, Hire Heroes USA matches participants to job openings with partnered employers that are committed to interviewing matched participants.
