CSCMP Awards and Recognition

CSCMP Corporate Member Recognized: Saddle Creek CEO Recognized as a Top Florida Executive

Florida Trend business magazine has recognized Saddle Creek Logistics Services’ CEO Cliff Otto as one of the Florida 500™. This research-based list identifies the state’s most influential business leaders across major industries.

Florida Trend editors selected the 500 executives on this inaugural list based on extensive contacts in regional business circles, hundreds of interviews and months of research. They used a variety of sources, including input from executives of economic development organizations, professional associations and others.

Spanning almost five decades, Otto’s career in the supply chain industry validates his selection for this list. After earning an MBA with an emphasis in logistics, he held executive management roles with CHEP USA, Baxter Healthcare and American Can Co. Since joining Saddle Creek in 2001, Otto has helped the company to more than double in size to become one of the largest, family-owned 3PL’s in North America.

The supply chain community at large has also benefited from Otto’s support. He helped to establish Saddle Creek as an industry partner with Florida Polytechnic University and is currently vice chair for its Board of Trustees. He was instrumental in establishing Saddle Creek’s sponsorship of the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) and serves as the relief organization’s vice president, agency relations.

Otto has held leadership roles with a number of organizations, including the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), Warehousing Education and Resource Council (WERC) and, most recently, as chairman of the International Warehouse Logistics Association (IWLA).
Throughout his career, Otto has demonstrated a distinguished record of contribution to the state of Florida as well as the disciplines of logistics and supply chain management.

CSCMP Featured Member: Anthonia Divieke Ovuobovwori, SCPro™

In October 2017, during my search for certificate courses on SCM online, I read about Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) on the CSCMP website, I knew it was the right community for professionals, I was very happy to know I could become a member and take the CSCMP SCPro™ certification exam.

I also realized that becoming a member of the CSCMP will broaden my network with other professionals and improve my knowledge in the SCM field. I registered as a Member in November 2017, and I have enjoyed reading the CSCMP quarterly magazine and CSCMP Supply Chain SmartBrief, because they keep me updated on recent news and trends in Supply Chain Industry.

After attending the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ (CSCMP) webinar: Training and Development with CSCMP with Nichole Mumford on 24, July 2018, I was inspired and motivated, as she answered all the questions satisfactorily that helped in my decision to take the exam in August 2018.

Achieving CSCMP SCPro™ Level One certification was a major milestone and a dream come true for me. The knowledge gained, and the certification, have helped me to demonstrate a high level of competency in my work, making me more empowered and better equipped in my new role as Logistics/Business Development Specialist.

I love CSCMP because once you become a member there are lots of opportunities for professionals to learn about best practices, innovations, and to connect with other professionals in the SC industry. I am very proud to be a CSCMP member.

2018 Supply Chain Hall of Fame Inductees Announced at the CSCMP EDGE Conference

CSCMP names Michael Dell, founder, chairman and CEO of Dell Technologies, George Stephenson, civil and mechanical engineer, known as the "Father of Railways", Peter Drucker,management consultant, educator, and author, and Dr. John Gattorna, author, academic and principal of a Sydney-based specialist advisory business, Gattorna Alignment, the 2018 CSCMP Distinguished Service Award Winner, as the 2018 Supply Chain Hall of Fame inductees, honoring individuals that have made outstanding contributions to the supply chain discipline.

The Supply Chain Hall of Fame was first initiated in 2016, and the initial inductees included all past Distinguished Service Award winners, JB Hunt, founder of JB Hunt Transport Services Inc.; Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company; and Malcom McLean, developer of the modern intermodal shipping container. Inductees were chosen for their thought leadership, creation or advancement of innovative technologies, and overall contributions to supply chain management.

The Supply Chain Hall of Fame allows us to recognize those who have been at the forefront of this growing, evolving, and ever-dynamic discipline, and to look towards those who will continue to shape it in the future. Intel Wins the 2018 Supply Chain Innovation Award at the 2018 CSCMP EDGE Conference

Intel, with team members Mani Janakiram, director, Supply Chain Intelligence and Analytics, Global Supply Chain Management, Intel and David Bayba, data scientist, Global Supply Chain Management, Intel, are announced as the winners of the 2018 Supply Chain Innovation Award (SCIA) at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals' (CSCMP) 2018 EDGE Conference held in Nashville, TN.

The SCIA is a live competition in which a panel of judges join EDGE Conference attendees to hear presentations on innovative solutions and real-world results form top supply chain companies. The competition is held throughout the week of the EDGE Conference and winners were announced on the final day at the closing session.

Intel: AI/Cognitive Computing Based Sourcing Intelligence
Intel has employed its technical prowess to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive computing tools to aid in making sense of the vast quantities of unstructured data it faces in today's data-centric world. Supply chain decision makers now have targeted and proactive information to support more complex data-based decisions, to identify new options and opportunities, and to alert potential supply disruptions and supply chain risks.

2018 Doctoral Dissertation Award Announced at the CSCMP Academic Research Symposium

The Doctoral Dissertation Award (DDA) is for doctoral students who demonstrate significant originality and technical competence in any supply chain function. The DDA is open to all who will have completed their doctoral work in a field related to functions within the supply chain.

The doctoral dissertation award was presented to Dr.Tobias Kosmol during CSCMP's Academic Research Symposium at the Annual EDGE Conference in Nashville, TN for his doctoral dissertation titled, "Supplier Quality Management in Emerging Markets - The Interplay of Behavior and Cognition".

The purpose of the dissertation is to address this gap by taking into account both SCM practices (i.e., activities that span firm boundaries and that a variety of firms might execute) and managerial cognition (i.e., the mental activities involved in managers' information processing). In particular, the dissertation takes a configurational approach to investigate the interplay between SCM practices and managerial cognition. A configurational approach analyzes how different combinations of factors (i.e., configurations) lead to an outcome of interest (Karatzas et al. 2016; Ragin 2008) and is particularly suited to generating a better understanding of the complex interplay between practices and cognition.

Tobias Kosmol completed his doctorate degree in 2017 at the Otto Beisheim School of Management in Koblenz, Germany under Professor Dr. Lutz Kaufmann. Dr. Kosmol completed a Bachelor of Arts in business administration from Friedrich-Alexander-University, has studied at Peking University and Sichuan University in China, he completed his Master's Degree in Management at the University of Mannheim. Dr. Kosmol is a member of the International Purchasing and Supply, Education and Research Association and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals.

2018 Teaching Innovation Award Announced at the CSCMP Academic Research Symposium

Within CSCMP's Academic Research Symposium, organizers devote an academic track to supply chain management teaching innovation and pedagogy. From these submissions, the Editorial Review Panel awards the submission with the largest impact on students and instruction within the field of supply chain and logistics. CSCMP is honored to present the Teaching Innovation Award to faculty members making a difference in the next generation of supply chain professionals.

The 2018 Teaching Innovation Award was presented to Dr. Scott Keller of the University of West Florida, Dr. Daniel Lynch of Dalhousie University, and Dr. Katrina Savitskie of the University of West Florida at CSCMP's Academic Research Symposium in Nashville, TN for their submission titled, "Elevating Student Competencies through Supply Chain Case Competitions: An Empirical Analysis Utilizing Student Feedback and Industry Judge Data"

"For more than 20 years, the Denver Transportation Club has hosted the annual Operation Stimulus where college students from across North America have come to compete. Our research provides a unique view into the perceptions of students and industry judges through an empirical analysis."

Their research has shown how students can benefit both in and out of the classroom by participating in active learning with case competitions.

2018 E. Grosvenor Plowman Award Announced at the CSCMP Academic Research Symposium

From among those papers accepted for presentation at the Academic Research Symposium, the best research is selected by the Editorial Review Panel and awarded the distinguished E. Grosvenor Plowman Award. Plowman recipients are invited to present their research at the Academic Research Symposium and recognized for their contributions. The Plowman Award is given in honor of E. Grosvenor Plowman, a lifetime supporter of both CSCMP and the logistics profession. Since its inception more than thirty years ago, the honor has been awarded annually.

The 2018 E. Grosvenor Plowman Award was presented to Dr. Remko van Hoek of the University of Arkansas, Dr. Laura Briou of Florida Gulf Coast University, and Dr. Stanley Fawcett of Weber State University for their paper titled, "Don't Build a Bridge to Nowhere: Triangulating Gaps in the Path to Successful Supplier Enabled."

2018 Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award Announced at the CSCMP Academic Research Symposium

CSCMP presented the Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award to the most valuable paper published in the Journal of Business Logistics (JBL) during CSCMP's Annual EDGE Conference beginning on Sept. 30, 2018, in Nashville, TN.

The 2018 Bernard J. La Londe Best Paper Award was awarded to Craig R. Carter, Lutz Kaufmann, and Claudia M. Wagner for their paper titled, "Reconceptualizing Intuition in Supply Chain Management".

Craig Carter is a professor in the Department of Supply Chain Management at Arizona State University. His primary research stream focuses on sustainable supply chain management. This research stream encompasses ethical issues in buyer-supplier relationships, environmental supply management, diversity sourcing, perceptions of opportunism in supply chain relationships, and the broader, integrative concepts of social responsibility and sustainability.

Lutz Kaufmann is a professor of international business and supply management at the Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany. Lutz has published more than a dozen books on strategy, supply management, and negotiations. Since 2008, Lutz has been the European Editor of the Journal of Supply Chain Management, and in that role, he helps to shape the future research agenda of that field.

Claudia M. Wagner received her Ph.D. in Economic Science from the Otto Beisheim School of Management. She is currently working with Lekkerland in Germany as a project and program manager managing and motivating cross-functional project management teams.

2018 State of Logistics - The Big Squeeze | Supply Chain Quarterly | 2018 Special Issue

Roaring demand for transportation and logistics services is causing capacity to tighten and wages to rise, pushing business logistics costs to 7.7 percent of U.S. GDP in 2017. Can shippers find the capacity they need while fighting higher costs?

In 2016, the title of the annual "State of Logistics Report" was "Logistics in Transition: New Drivers Behind the Wheel." That title referred to the growing influence of consumers over when, where, and how their e-commerce orders are processed and delivered.

The 2018 report, "Steep Grade Ahead," might just as easily have been called "Carriers Grab the Wheel Back." With a healthy economy and strong consumer spending driving demand for transportation services and low unemployment rates exacerbating a labor shortage, capacity is tight, and carriers find themselves in a position of strength. After years of downward pressure on rates, carriers in several modes were able to raise rates in 2017. And although shifting U.S. trade policies have introduced uncertainty, the forces that affected rates and capacity last year "show no signs of easing in 2018," the report's authors say. In short, it's likely to remain a seller's market for a while.

Meanwhile, the shifting demand patterns, technological advances, and new competitors cited in previous reports have not gone away. In fact, startup activity in logistics technology reached the "highest levels in recent history," the 2018 report says. These trends suggest shippers will turn to technology in their quest to offset tightening capacity, forestall rising costs and improve risk management.

The "State of Logistics Report," now in its 29th year, is issued by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and presented by Penske Logistics. Written by the global management consulting firm A.T. Kearney, the report provides an overview of industry trends and U.S. business logistics costs for the previous year. It also includes a review of macroeconomic factors affecting logistics costs, analysis of each major logistics sector, insights from industry leaders, and discussion of important trends and their potential implications for the future.

CSCMP Academic Member, Mary Long, to Lead UT’s Supply Chain Forum

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s Haslam College of Business has appointed Mary Long as the new managing director of the Global Supply Chain Institute’s Supply Chain Forum. Long’s 26-year industry career includes leadership roles in supply chain for companies including Campbell’s Soup, General Mills, Quaker Oats/Gatorade, Pillsbury and Domino’s Pizza. She most recently served as managing director of the Supply Chain Management Institute at the University of San Diego’s School of Business.

Long has served as chair of the board of directors of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and serves on the advisory boards for AWESOMEleaders.org, ALAN (American Logistics Aid Network) and Hashmove.com. She will take over for Paul Dittmann, who held the position for many years, and is returning to teaching and assuming the role of assistant department head.

New July/August 2018 Logistics Manager Index Just Released

Get the latest Logistics Manager Index (LMI) for May/June 2018. The LMI is calculated using a diffusion index, in which any reading above 50 percent indicates that logistics is expanding; a reading below 50 percent is indicative of a shrinking logistics industry.

The LMI score is a combination of all of the other components that make up the index including inventory levels and costs, warehousing capacity, utilization, and prices, and transportation capacity, utilization, and prices.
