As Board Chair for CSCMP, I was asked to write the introduction for what we are going to share for Women’s History Month. The day I sat down to write this introduction, Katherine Johnson died. For those of you who don’t know, her story was told in the 2016 movie, “Hidden Figures.” It made me wonder what we could do this month to unearth “Hidden Figures” in our own lives, and in our own Supply Chain worlds. We have to make an effort to write a more inclusive history and future, because the women were there, and are there today.
How many of you had working moms, or working single moms, or grandmothers?! Women have been running farms and ranches for a couple of centuries (or more); building tanks and flying military aircraft for 75 years; working in all our post-war factories; driving trucks; running distribution operations; running manufacturing plants; designing products; and calculating rocket trajectories. We just don’t see these women written into history. In my first operations job, 30 years ago, in a 5-square mile chemical plant, my Distribution Operations Manager boss was a woman, and HER boss was a woman. It seemed normal. It should be normal. The majority of the most senior Supply Chain executives I am working with today–at some of the largest A&D companies–are women, and many of their bosses are women, either running multi-billion dollar business units or as CEO's. We need to accentuate their visibility. We need to accelerate bringing along more women. Guess what? It’s going to help us with our talent shortage. Who could you write in to your history this month? Who could you reach out to and acknowledge they were or are a hidden figure in running yesterday’s or today’s supply chains? Post a call-out to any of those women on our CSCMP LinkedIn community. #HiddenFigures #CSCMP Visit https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/cscmp-celebrates-women-supply-chain-womens-history-meyer-scpro-/ to view the full article online.

By Toby Gooley | From the Quarter 1 2020 issue Women supply chain professionals are increasingly making their way into the highest levels of corporate management. Why are more doors opening for them now? In 2014, when Mary Barra became chief executive officer of General Motors, supply chain professionals were gratified that one of their own had reached the pinnacle of corporate leadership. Her background—which includes manufacturing, procurement, and supply chain management—was a factor in her choice as leader of the giant automaker. Her appointment was also notable for another reason: her gender. Barra was not the first supply chain professional to lead a business, nor was she the first woman to head a Fortune 500 company. But as CEO of one of the world's largest manufacturers, she set a highly visible example for other women in supply chain. Now more women are entering the "C-suite," following in the footsteps of pioneers like Judy McReynolds, head of ArcBest Corp., and Ann Drake, chair of DSC Logistics and founder of AWESOME (Achieving Women's Excellence in Supply Chain Operations, Management, and Education). They're staking their claims as presidents, directors, and chief executive, operating, supply chain, procurement, information, and technology officers. In addition to the three executives we profile elsewhere in this article, examples include: • Beth Ford, president and CEO of Land O'Lakes Inc. • Kathryn Wengel, chief global supply chain officer, Johnson & Johnson • Maria Lindenberg, chief procurement officer, Chevron Corporation • Sally Miller, chief information officer of DHL North America • Francesca DeBiase, executive vice president and chief supply chain and sustainability officer, McDonald's Corp. With women supply chain professionals increasingly making their way into the ranks of corporate leadership, it's a good time to ask: Why are more doors opening for them now? Thank you to Richard Donaldson, VP Platform, Requis for sharing this Hot Topic.
A few years ago, unless you worked in supply chain, most people wouldn’t have known what the term meant. But the next few years will change that, because the 2020s will be the Decade of Supply Chain. Supply chain (or as we prefer, the value network) will gain increased visibility not only within organizations that are built on them, but in the public consciousness. In the 1980s, anyone who was into computers was called a geek or a nerd, but now it’s the ‘in’ thing to be good with tech. Similarly, as our CEO Richard Martin says, supply chain managers should “get ready to become the cool kid on the block.” Visit https://cscmp.org/store/detail.aspx?id=HT20-REQUIS to view the full article online.

We're presenting a video contest for young professionals and student members, age 32 and under, to demonstrate their ability to think futuristically and deliver potential solutions to the industry. To enter, candidates must record a short video providing a thoughtful answer to one of these two questions by April 1, 2020: 1. In the past decade, what has been the most influential technology for supply chain management, and what do you foresee emerging as the most transformative technology over the next decade? 2. "Visibility/Traceability Across the End-to-End Supply Chain" has been one of the most funded supply chain initiatives, according to Gartner, over the past two years; yet this covers a vast spectrum of connections and is not easily achieved. How would you define this task and construct an implementation plan that spans the entire supply chain? Enter the contest for a chance to win one complimentary registration to EDGE 2020, hotel lodging and a $500 U.S. travel stipend. Visit https://woobox.com/8fpwgh to view the full article online.

The overall LMI score of 52.6 is down (-10.1) from this time a year ago, when it registered at 63.3. The lowest 11 scores in the history of the index have all occurred within the last 11 months. It should be pointed out that every score has been above 50.0, indicating growth in the logistics industry, though growth has been very slow (and has been trending slower). Logistics metrics, especially those involving transportation and inventory, are global in nature.
