“Our members tell us that now, more than ever before, that the very notion of embedding sustainable practices from within their company’s supply chain delivers real, tangible results.” - Mark Baxa, CEO and President The 2021 State of Supply Chain Sustainability Report, released July 14, explores how supply chain sustainability (SCS) practices are being implemented globally and what that means for professionals, enterprises, industries and the planet. The report is a collaboration between The MIT Center for Transportation & Logistics (MIT CTL) and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) and sponsored by BlueYonder, C.H. Robinson, KPMG, Intel, and Sam’s Club. The report findings are beginning to shed light on how supply chains are becoming increasingly recognized for their impact on a firms’ sustainability objectives and public image. “Our members tell us that now, more than ever before, that the very notion of embedding sustainable practices from within their company’s supply chain delivers real, tangible results.” said Mark Baxa, CSCMP President and CEO. “Competing in today’s global marketplace is not just about the high-quality products supply chains plan, procure, make and deliver. It’s about doing the right things right for the whole of society.” Although there are many approaches to investing in SCS according to the report, interest in human rights protection, worker welfare and safety, and energy savings & renewable energy increased significantly over the past year. Supplier development was found to be the most common mechanism used by firms to deliver on their SCS promises. To succeed in the future, supply chain professionals will need to be comfortable working in a digitally enabled supply chain that moves quickly and reacts with agility. Yet at most companies, supply chain work and roles were not designed with these principles in mind. If the events of the past year and a half have made anything clear, it’s that the supply chains of the future will need to be agile and digital, quickly managing change through the use of effective sense-and-respond capabilities. The pandemic has certainly pushed supply chains to their limits, leading many supply chain professionals to question how effective they are at identifying and reacting to disruptive events (see Figure 1). Now more than ever, agility is a key priority.

"I joined CSCMP in fall 2020 to prepare for an upcoming career change. I am new to supply chain and wanted to learn more about the industry and connect with other professionals. I have not been disappointed! Attend events and talk to other attendees! Despite spending more time at home because of the pandemic, I have attended events, gone on virtual factory tours, and met professionals from all over the world since joining CSCMP. Just because we can't leave home or travel as much as we did before, doesn't mean we can't continue growing and connecting."
