International Student Hours Capped at 24 Hours
Like most students, international post-secondary students often work part-time jobs while they study. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, international students were capped at 20 hours of work per week while class was in session.
In 2020, that cap was temporarily removed to help address labour shortages. Last month, the 20 hour cap came back into effect, with intentions to increase it to 24 hours per week starting in September 2024.
This move is meant to ensure that students have time to succeed in their studies, and to prevent student visas from being used as a substitute for work permits.
For many employers, however, this change means unexpected gaps in the workforce. If you’re impacted by this change, now is the best time to prepare with other staffing options. Reach out to sales@immigrate.biz or 306-805-0113. We’re happy to help smooth the transition!
