Last week, a second attempt to repeal California’s landmark infrastructure funding was filed with the Secretary of State. This effort, backed by a group of California Republicans, would repeal the gas tax and vehicle fee increases while also requiring that any future tax hikes be approved by voters.
SB 1 will provide for $5.2 billion annually towards California’s failing infrastructure through a variety of increases to the gas tax and vehicle registration fee to address California’s $130 billion backlog of deferred road maintenance that has threatened the state’s ability to move freight around the state.
CTA supported SB 1 after engaging with the Governor and Legislative Leaders in negotiations that resulted in many CTA board approved positions being adopted. This included, no VLF increase, no registration fee increases, no weight fee increases and the inclusion of CTA’s Useful Life Concept that will allow companies to keep their trucks for a minimum of 13 years, even if ARB requires new technology.
