Having Issues With Renewing Your CDL?
Stay Tuned for Improvements
Over the past few weeks, CTA received a few calls and e-mails from members expressing their frustration with the amount of time it took to get an appointment with the DMV to renew their Commercial Drivers License (CDL). In response to those complaints, CTA notified the DMV and offered to work with them on addressing this issue. DMV recently informed CTA that they are working on providing flexibility for the renewal process and would like CTA’s input. This item should be progressing in the next couple of weeks and as it does, CTA will be sure to update you. Thank you to the members who brought this issue to our attention. DMV Keeps Steady On Drive Test Appointments
In response to numerous complaints received from members, CTA introduced legislation in 2017 that addressed the delays prospective drivers were facing when scheduling a commercial driver test with the DMV. Because of CTA’s legislation (AB 301), DMV established a new policy that allowed for extended hours at DMV commercial drive test facilities statewide, which provided prospective drivers flexibility on scheduling a drive test appointment. In addition to the new policy, DMV also changed their appointment setting system which has helped streamline appointments.
CTA and the authors of AB 301 (Assemblymember Rodriguez and Assemblymember Patterson) are committed to a continued reduction in the number of days it takes to schedule an appointment. Each month, the DMV sends CTA and both Assemblymember offices a spreadsheet that shows how DMV is accommodating requests for scheduling commercial drive tests statewide. All offices are consistently showing reduced wait times below 20 days. Prior to CTA’s bill, AB 301, being introduced, delays were averaging 45-90 days statewide. DMV has committed to CTA that they will to continue their efforts to lower the delays even further. CTA will continue to monitor wait times. In the meantime, let CTA know if you have a driver who is encountering delays on scheduling a drive test appointment. For more information contact Eric Sauer at esauer@caltrux.org.
