CTA Heavy Haul Members Submit Roundabout Guidance

Over the past few years, California has seen an increase of roundabouts (circular intersections) being planned and ultimately constructed throughout the state. At many of the previous California Transportation Permit Advisory Council (CTPAC) meetings CTA’s heavy haul members have expressed concerns over planned roundabout locations, lengthy detours from the roundabout not being able to accommodate an extra legal load and safety concerns that may arise from the construction of the roundabout and the impact it has on the heavy haul industry.
In response to those concerns, CTA created a “Guidance for Roundabouts” document that also includes the Crane Owners Association, Southern California Contractors Association, Western States Trucking Association and the Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association. The guidance document formally highlights the heavy haul industry’s concerns regarding the planning of roundabout locations and its request to Caltrans to communicate with the industry on those planned locations.
CTA would like to thank SC&RA for providing much of the background information that is contained in the guidance document. This item will be discussed at the upcoming CTPAC meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 16th at the Port of Long Beach.
