Final Phase 2 Truck Fuel Efficiency/GHG Rule Released
EPA/NHTSA announced the release of their final fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction rule last week. This is the second phase of this rulemaking, impacting trucks beginning in model year 2021 with requirements phased in through 2027.
Newly manufactured trailers, left out of the first phase of the rules, will have aerodynamic requirements beginning in 2021 with tighter standards phased in until 2027.
The push by agencies such as CARB and the South Coast AQMD, who had submitted a petition for a new, lower NOx emission standard for engines as early as the 2021 model year was also acknowledged with EPA saying they will take up discussions on a new standard after the publication of the final Phase 2 rule.
