Attention Heavy Specialized Carriers: Important Information Regarding the 9th Street At-Grade Railroad Crossing Closure

As you know the Port Of Long Beach will be closing the 9th Street At- Grade Railroad Crossing on March 9th. CTA and many of its Heavy Specialized Carrier members have been engaged with the Port since the closure was announced. Throughout the process CTA members have been working with Port staff, LB Public Works Department, CHP, Long Beach Police and the Long Beach Harbor Patrol on identifying and testing suitable alternative routes. Included in this alert is information contained in the link below that will inform you of those alternative routes.

9th Street Permit Request Information The Port of Long Beach has agreed to allow specific loads because of size that cannot traverse the alternative routes the ability to submit a permit request to use the 9th Street At Grade Railroad Crossing. This option is only allowed for certain extremely large loads that do not qualify for the alternative route(s) and qualify to use the 9th Street route.

All other extra-legal permitted loads will have to use the alternative routes.

To view the Port of Long Beach’s Overweight and Oversize Cargo landing page that dedicates a section to the 9th Street Closure including the following:

• Fact Sheet on Closure

• Flowchart and Permit Requirements for 9th Street Crossing use permit

• 9th Street Permit Application Form

• Railroad Work Plan Form*** Approved Permitted loads for the 9th Street At- Grade Railroad Crossing route will need to provide specific information that includes start and stop time for the move so the Port can work with the Rail operators on stopping trains from moving during the time of the extra-legal move. The port has agreed to pay for flaggers, move of K-RAIL and fencing other related costs associated with stopping the trains to accommodate approved 9th Street moves.  Carriers are advised to provide as much advanced time as possible when a 9th Street move is needed. Contact information is included in the information contained in the link below.
