As mobile carriers make the transition from 3G Networks to advanced networks like 5G, this change has the potential of impacting older cell phones and mobile devices that use data services, including Electronic Logging Devices (ELD).
Once a 3G Network is no longer supported, it is unlikely that an ELD that is reliant on that network will meet the ELD Technical Specifications.
This means that any ELD that requires 3G cellular connectivity to perform its functionality will no longer be in compliance.
The FMCSA has been communicating to the trucking industry about the 3G Sunset and the impacts it could have on ELD connectivity. It is highly recommended that you contact your ELD provider to ensure ELD compliance.
The following carriers have provided their sunset dates:
- AT&T 3G- February 22, 2022
- Sprint 3G (T-Mobile) March 31, 2022
- Sprint LTE (T-Mobile) June 30, 2022
- T-Mobile 3G- July 1, 2022
- Verizon 3G- December 31, 2022
