Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has extended its emergency declaration waiver on hours of service through May 31, 2021. The Agency expects this will be the final extension of the Emergency Declaration. | FMCSA News Release
This extension of the Emergency Declaration is limited to transportation of:
- livestock and livestock feed;
- medical supplies and equipment related to the testing, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19;
- vaccines, constituent products, and medical supplies and equipment including ancillary supplies/kits for the administration of vaccines, related to the prevention of COVID-19;
- supplies and equipment necessary for community safety, sanitation, and prevention of community in transmission of COVID-19 such as masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, soap and disinfectants; and
- food, paper products and other groceries for emergency restocking of distribution centers or stores.
For the next three months, in support of COVID-19 relief, Caltrans will be issuing special transportation permits for legal truck combinations to carry Oxygen and Nitrogen to hospitals with the maximum allowable gross vehicle weight up to 88,000 pounds. These special permits can travel only on the State highway system, excluding restricted bridges listed in the permits, and they will be valid until April 30, 2021.
Please note that these special transportation permits are NOT for Interstate routes and local roads, and the carrier must get permits from County or City jurisdictions to travel on local roads.
