CTA in Action: Government Affairs Update
This week CalTrans announced that it has fast tracked funding for 30 bridges on California’s most important freight corridors under the new infrastructure funding from Senate Bill 1. The routes include freight-critical junctures on Interstate 80 in Northern California and on I-5 in Southern California.
Last week, a second attempt to repeal California’s landmark infrastructure funding was filed with the Secretary of State. This effort, backed by a group of California Republicans, would repeal the gas tax and vehicle fee increases while also requiring that any future tax hikes be approved by voters.
On Sept. 15, 2017, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published revised voluntary guidance on autonomous vehicles. The document incorporates public comments made to the Sept. 2016 version. Comments are due by Nov. 14, 2017.
The federal Internal Revenue Service has issued a variety of bulletins following Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, warning of fake charity scams, offering relief from certain tax filings by those in the areas affected, and information for tax preparers with clients in those areas. For details on these items and more, in both English and Spanish, see on-line at Tax Relief in Disaster Situations. At least some of the states with hurricane emergencies can also be expected to grant waivers and extensions for certain tax filings.
Compliance and Regulatory News
We have had several member reports of OSHA audits on Heat Illness Prevention Programs (HIPP). This is a reminder that HIPPs are required for any outdoor places of employment.
We will be coordinating further outreach and training in the coming months. In the meanwhile, if you are unfamiliar with these regulations, please see the following link for more information:
Law enforcement agencies throughout North America will engage in heightened traffic safety enforcement and educational outreach for Operation Safe Driver Week, Oct. 15-21.
