CTA in Action: Government Affairs Update
Recently it was announced that CTA member Fed Ex would be working with Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT) to train their drivers nationwide to help fight human trafficking. TAT trains industry employees (drivers) to recognize and respond to various forms of human trafficking, which can include forced labor, domestic servitude and commercial sex trafficking. CTA has been a strong supporter of TAT and since 2012 CTA and its units have contributed $38,000 to the organization. CTA is working with TAT on getting CTA members and their drivers TAT trained by making the TAT training materials available to use. If you are interested in receiving the training materials to use to train your employees click on the following link - Truckers Against Trafficking. For more information contact Kylla Lanier, Executive Director of Truckers Against Trafficking at klanier@truckersagainsttrafficking.org.
The federal tax reform package that passed Congress December 20 changes the rules for some truck drivers on the expenses they incur for meals and incidentals while they’re away from home on travel. Employee truck drivers whose carrier does not pay them a per diem allowance will no longer be able to take the costs of meals and incidentals as an itemized deduction, as they have in the past.

Exciting changes are on the horizon for CTA in 2018, and these changes will ensure that CTA becomes an even greater resource to you, our valued members. We used the results of the CTA carrier member survey which was conducted in the fall of 2017 as a guide. We asked CTA members about our strengths and weaknesses, what they want, and what they need the most from CTA to ensure their success and the success of the trucking industry. We listened carefully, and will be making significant changes in the months ahead.
Be recognized for your company’s efforts and achievements in safety. An award from a state or national organization shows drivers and other transportation employees that their efforts are recognized and appreciated throughout the industry and by their peers. The purpose of the Fleet Safety Awards Program is to recognize companies that reduce accidents by designing and running a top-notch safety program.
CTA Highlights
CTA member Oak Harbor will be recognizing FedEx Freight (another CTA member) driver Matt Cadwell for his heroic efforts last month when he rendered aid to an Oak Harbor driver who was involved in an accident. Matt remained on site with the driver for over an hour while emergency services responded to the accident. In recognition for his heroic efforts, Oak Harbor will be presenting a plaque and other items to Mr. Cadwell at the FedEx Freight terminal in Orange, CA. The California Trucking Association and the trucking industry thanks Mr. Cadwell for his heroic act last month.
