On September 24, 2018, ATA filed a petition with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) seeking determination that California's meal-and rest-break rules may not be enforced on commercial drivers who are subject to Federal hours of service regulations. Following the petition, the FMCSA quickly opened up a comment period regarding the petition. The deadline to submit comments is Monday, October 29, 2018. CTA strongly encourages you to submit comments before the comment period closes. As a member of the California trucking industry, your input matters and can directly impact changes to the Meal and Rest Break rules.

During last week’s CTA Safety, Security and Human Resources Policy Committee, the new Commander of the Commercial Motor Carrier Division, Captain Tony Coronado attended the meeting and was introduced along with his Lieutenants to members in attendance. Captain Coronado recently replaced the former Commercial Division Commander, Captain Sean Duryee who moved onto another position within the CHP.

The Internal Revenue Service has issued guidance on the continued deductibility of business meals. The federal tax reform package enacted late in 2017 amended Internal Revenue Code section 274 to generally disallow income tax deductions for entertainment, amusement, or recreation. IRS points out, however, that Congress did not specifically address the deductibility of expenses for business meals.

The Tri-County Unit held it's President's Salute and Law Enforcement Recognition Night on October 6th. It was held at Ottavio's Restaurant in Camarillo. It was a great evening honoring 2018 CTA President Lynnette Brown and the CHP. Lynnette gave a recap on some of her highlights during her year as President. CTA CEO Shawn Yadon discussed some of the items CTA is fighting for and against.
